The root of the perennial herbaceous plant Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. var. mongholicus (Bge.) Hsiao or A. membranaceus (Fisch.) Bge. of family Leguminosae.
Location
Mainly produced in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shanxi and Heilongjiang provinces in China. The one produced in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is better.
Harvest
Plucked in spring and autumn.

Slight smell and sweet, with legumes flavor when chewed.

Coarse and straight long root, white-yellow cross section, rich powder, sweet.

DEFINITION of Astragalus Root:
Astragalus Root consists of the dried root of Astragalus membranaceus var. mongholicus (Bunge) P.K.Hsiao or Astragalus
membranaceus (Fisch.) Bunge (Fam. Fabaceae). Astragalus root is typically harvested from a 2- to 3-year-old plant in early fall. It
contains NLT 0.04% of cycloartane saponins and NLT 0.03% of isofavonoids calculated on the dried basis.

Astragalus is also called huang qi or milk vetch. It comes from a type of bean or legume. While there are multiple species of astragalus, most astragalus supplements contain Astragalus membranaceus. The herb is said to offer multiple health benefits for multiple conditions, including heart benefits.
Astragalus is thought to stimulate the immune system. It has antioxidant effects that inhibit free radical production. In the body, free radicals damage cells and are linked to many health problems associated with aging. There is, though, no known way to stop free radicals completely.

Early research suggests that giving astragalus intravenously (by IV) or using Chinese herbal mixtures containing astragalus might reduce nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and bone marrow suppression (a decrease in the cells that provide immunity) that is associated with chemotherapy treatments.
