Chinese gallnut is the gall produced mainly by parasitic aphids of Melaphis chinensis (Bell) Baker on the leaf of Rhus chinensis Mill., Rhus potaninii Maxim, or Rhus phunjabensis Stew. var. sinica (Diels) Rehd. et Wils. 

 

Chinese gallnuts, also referred to as Chinese nutgall, Chinese gall, Galla Chinensis or Wu Bei Zi in Chinese, which are rich in gallotannins, a type of hydrolysable tannins. It is a plant excretion produced when irritants are released by the larvae of gall insects, such as those of the Cynipidae family, the gall wasps.
